Big Site vs Mini Websites...

I'm new to the forum and have a question which am hoping for some expert help with.

Our goal is to show up for various city areas with key phrase "web design", i.e. "Sacramento web design"

Question is if we should buy a bunch of domain names with our target city names & key phrase in them? Or have a single domain with dedicated pages for each? Please consider content is unique and all other factors are excluded.

ABC.com/web-design-sacramento
ABC.com/web-design-tampa
ABC.com/web-design-omaha
...etc.

or

ABCsacramentowebdesign.com
abctampawebdesign.com
abcomahawebdesign.com

Which is better approach for the best search engine results for each phrase?
#big #mini #site #websites

Exact match domains would be better if there is tough competition and you can afford to buy multiple domains. If there's extremely low competition you might be able to get away with one site though.

I believe getting 5 websites in the top 10 is harder than one at the top position. Chances are you can't get quite enough power behind all 5.

One authoritative site is better. As someone else mentioned, you will have to put a lot of work into ranking multiple sites. You will be competing with yourself. Additionally, with the advent of Hummingbird, Google wants to see lots of relevant content on a single domain. Sites with ~10 articles on them are not ranked as highly as sites with 50+.

On the whole, you get what you pay for.

If you buy a catchy single domain containing your desired main keyword then set up sub-domains for each geo-targeted area, Google will index as if they are all individual sites, so you get to build a large authority site but it contains lots of laser targeted mini sites.

Thanks for the help and advice everyone! After reading through your comments I'm going to go with single domain approach as that seems like the better approach. I really appreciate the help!
