How To Rank Local Site for several keywords

I have a local roofing site that I want to rank for keywords that have a lower search volume but have very low competition. If my main keyword is "roofing mycity" then how do I rank for key words like "roofers in mycity st", "roofers city st", "roofing companies in mycity st, "roofing companies mycity".....

Don't want the site to turn spammy and end up on page 1,496 or deeper. Do I just use back links to the main page regardless if the keywords are actually in the content? Do I place well written articles in the blog of the site which would contain the keyword at least once and backlink to the article?

Focus on local business directory, classifieds or business listing sites that gives you better result. ALso choose less competition keyword for rank fast on SE.

I would be careful with this. I do mostly small city specific service sites. I wouldn't build a new page for each of these different search terms, you're just saying the same thing over and over.

You can get a lot of mileage by just making sure your name, address including city, state, and zip are on every page of your site.

For a roofing company what I've found that works well is a services we provide section. Have a SEO'd page for each service and get your low hanging fruit there. Think about the mindset of who's surfing... Most people that end up getting a roof do it for the same reason.. Their roof developed a leak. They normally go type in "roof leak repair my city" It's been my experience that this will be your most visited page after the home page.

Also make a "drywall ceiling repair my city" page. Almost everybody who has ceiling damage has a leaking roof. Think outside the box. Find you a painter/drywall guy to sub the work to and double dip.

Do you have a "chimney repair my city" page yet? You would be shocked at the traffic you'll get from these pages.

    Gutter repair page?

    Chimney tuckpointing page?

    Metal roofing installation page?

    Shingle repair page?

I'm not saying the list is endless but there's lots of low hanging fruit in this business that won't get your site penalized like creating the same geo specific page over and over.

    Good luck with it.

Local SEO is either citation or getting links from your local host.

Well written articles and back-links will help your ranking but you will have to do specific on-page optimization; you must include the keywords or key phrases into your Headers, Titles and content page. These changes together with your back links would help. You should also keep your keyword density between 1-5 percent, any higher could be considered "spammy”.
