A landing page as the home page of my website

Hello forum members,

I have found a niche that can make me money (atleast so I think). My idea is to make a website, put up articles and do some SEO to get the website ranked.

My question is: Is it a good idea to make the first page you see when you visit the website to be a landing page for the product I am affiliating? I want to get as much conversions as possible. I am using a premium wordpress template for my website.

Or should I put the advertisement on another page of the website? Let me know.

If you do not really care if the visitors come back to your blog then, Yes.

But, if you would like to have people keep coming back then, No.

Then no it is. I think it is better to give them quality content to get them to value me, I think it converts better too. It's actually pretty obvious. I'll go with no. Thanks!

Agree with this. The home page of a site should be solid, real content that's of interest to all visitors. People usually use landing pages for two reasons. One, it can be a short, direct "call to action" aimed at one group of people, and pushing one particular item or service. Two, people use different landing pages to track where visitors are coming from. As in, you could have one landing page and advertise it/market it at one place, and another, different landing page marketed elsewhere. Then you track visitors and see what landing page is most effective (which does better, so you know which marketing method works best to get visitors).

I hate how this forum works, everyone sees it through their own perspective.

Yes. Making a landing page as your home page is a great idea. Straight to the point, quick and easy. You've added more content about the subject? Great, if i need to read them i will, but if i am looking to buy I will buy, or i will not buy. Giving me what i want upfront is the only way websites should be made.

It all depends on your niche. If your niche is 'how to get a girlfriend' then i will want read your website, get some tips, try them on my own. If you have a product, i will have to be convinced that it'll be worth my time. I don't care where your actual landing page is, front page, side page, left page, right page, it is all the same, its 2014 not 1998.

Funny, I thought that this was a good way for a forum to work. Everyone gives their input from their own perspective. Then the original poster has a variety of ways to look at things, and can make a decision that works for him.

OP isn't asking if his home page should be filled with quality content. He obviously knows that quality is important, he loves his visitors etc. He wants to be reassured that his way of doing it will be okay.

All of the responses so far were built upon some old man saying that "no you need quality content on your home page and if you don't you don't care about your visitors"

            HA! Very True.

A landing page as your homepage is an interesting idea, i guess it depends what your trying to do. I suggest adding a chatwing to the landing page also, should bring an additional element.

    Hi convictie,

Technically speaking, a "landing page" is always the first page your visitor will see when arriving at your website from an advertisement, search result, or link. That makes the first part of your question self-evident, the first page is always "the" landing page. While it is common to refer to a page that has been designed specifically as a dedicated lander for a specific advertisement as a "landing page", any page of your website can be a landing page if you are pointing traffic there.

To answer the second part of your question which is whether your homepage should be dedicated to a single objective, or more like a traditional homepage. Well the answer to that question varies based on whether your website has a single objective or multiple objectives. In either case, every page of your website should be designed to focus on a single primary objective. This doesn't mean the page cannot have secondary objectives, as long as those competing objectives are not equally weighted to the primary objective for visitors of that page.

Generally speaking, the homepage of a traditional website, with multiple objectives, will be designed with navigation as the primary objective of the homepage. The goal of this type of homepage is to help the visitor find the page, or section of the website that allows the user to complete their intended objective.

On the other hand, when a website has a single objective, it is usually a best practice to design the homepage with a focus on completing that objective which generally provides a better user experience.

Since any page of your website can become the landing page for an advertisement, search result or link, you need to stop thinking in terms of your website as place with a single entry point. That is not how the web works, and is definitely not how search engines work.

Search engines do not rank websites, they rank individual web pages. Once you fully grasp this fundamental concept the answer should be self evident. Make sure that you are promoting and optimizing each page of your website for the exact type of traffic that should be arriving at that page as the landing page for the user's visit.

Any page of your website can become the landing page for a specific source of traffic. Focus on selecting the proper landing page for a given search term and stop thinking about reorganizing your website with the silly notion that everyone will arrive at your homepage, because they certainly will not if your traffic source is from search engines.

I think a home page must be a landing page in every sense. If you are selling a product or service, put up a contact form either at the top or at the bottom and put your content or services or pruducts you sell or provide in the body.

No, I would not suggest that you put it on the home page. You should try to make website engaging to your users and this will keep them coming back. It will also help to give a long-term quality page rankings.

The forum is working the way it should, so nothing to worry there (for those complaining). What you need to understand is not every niche and product works in the same way. Test your conversion and then tweak it and again test. That's the only way to find out what works best.
