How does Google feel about this?

I have 2 method I am thinking about doing. Which would Google like (or not like) in terms of SEO, and which is recommended, if either. Alternative suggestions also welcome.

Method 1) Set up a domain www.mysite.com with different pages for different cities, i.e. www.mysite.com/chicago and www.mysite.com/baltimore

When people go to www.mysite.com/baltimore they see a templated text with baltimore inserted where localization is needed. The same text would be displayed in Chicago, except that Chicago would be entered where localization is necessary.

Does Google see this as helpful for the user, or do they see it as duplicate content?

Method 2) Same idea with subdomains. Does it make a difference if it is http://baltimore.mysite.com with the templated text.

I think, it is no harm of using same template, However, If you include some unique content over there, that would be great... I had worked on a shopping cart, where we have used the same TEMPLATE and we used to update many products....So, there are some kind of different content, We were up on google on # 2 without any more BACKLINKs, So, all depends on your onsite SEO

Only you know what information you'll be publishing to the site.

Do YOU see it as useful content?

I ask because I've seen a LOT of fake blogs which have been "personalised" in this manner, where the blog owner professes to come from Baltimore/Chicago/[insert place name here], and goes on to talk about how they make thousands using a 'make money' product...

In that specific case, I would say that localising the content does NOT make it useful to the user, it's done just as a marketing ploy, and the content is just purely lies. The blog owner is pretending to come from the users town/city just to gain their trust and eventually extract money from them.

      So, are your intentions honourable?
