If you get penalized at all, it won't be for "duplicate content", because that isn't "duplicate content". It will be a Penguin update penalty for "mass, spammy backlinks" (or "overoptimization", as Google calls it).

Backlinks like that won't help you, anyway, even if you don't get penalized. Don't even think about it. Heed the warning of these posts/threads (and 100 others like them).

That would be pointless. There's no reason to submit unique content to Ezine Articles. You should publish articles on your own site first and acquire the initial indexation-rights for yourself. Then do anything else you want to do with the article (including putting a copy of it in Ezine Articles, if you want to, but without "changing" it). (Don't submit it to multiple article directories, though - that helps nobody, and just makes your backlinks look questionable to Google, if you do it too much).

That's even against the ToS of EZ if I'm not mistaken. I believe I read something like that when I was fixing my EZ account for the writer I hired.

Nonetheless, Alexa is right. Post and publish your high-quality articles on YOUR own website. Once your published article appears on Google SERPs, then, it's up to you if you'd like to post it somewhere else. Personally, I will only stick to my own website.
