Audio Versions Of Articles A Boost To SEO?

So I've been contemplating the importance of user experience in SEO recently and I had a thought that some of you might like to come in on...

We all know the benefits of transcribing a video or podcast for SEO as this adds more textual content to a page but what about if you reversed the process and took an article (maybe already ranking, maybe not) and recorded an audio version and then embedded that on the same page via HTML5.

Do you think Google would take any notice?

Clearly people like to consume content in different ways so could catering for everyone's preferences get you in Google's good books?

  • I don't think it would do anything from a seo standpoint.
  • That's a really interesting idea. Lately, I've been on the go so much, that I'm consuming more info through podcasts than through blogs. I hadn't thought of converting any of my own content to audio. Not sure how it would help SEO, but it might be a way to attract a different audience.
  • So you guys don't think that Google have something in their algorithm that asks "has this page got rich media on it?" and if yes, give a slight boost (talking very small here). I'm sure I've heard people talk about how you should add videos to a page for SEO reasons so why would audio be any different?

And what about the user engagement? If people listen to an article being talked about / read aloud, then it is likely to take longer than skim reading an article so an immediate bounce back to Google would be less likely.
  • If you then went out and shared the recording on audio sharing sites with a link back, yes! The more diverse your link profile the better, and I bet not many people use this technique.
  • I think it is a good idea. It is simply different from other methods and user also find it interesting and will want to see it t least once. It also makes a lot of diversity from the SEO purpose.

    • Ummmm, thanks....I guess?! Is that a genuine comment or just spam to get your sig link seen? I'm not sure I understood it either way.

  • It could help. Video is SEO friendly, Google-Panda friendly and on Google’s results pages to stay.
