Im not sure that you understand what keywords are. Every sentence that is ever written has key words. What ever you write on you site Google will decide what its about and put it into some catagory. Whether its the one you want to be in is another matter.

im well aware of what keywords are. The question is "Is it possible" to rank a website without any keywords.

If you don't have any keywords what are you trying to rank for?

And sometimes people rank for what are not "their" keywords.

Ask yourself this. What is anyone going to type into google to find my site?

If people do not have to type in anything, and have your site come up, then there
          is your answer.

Yes, it is possible. Just hit

I'm feeling lucky button. No keywords! Of course if you have typed nothing into the box,
then you will need to choose what you are feeling lucky for. Many times it will zap
you to a google site, sometimes to a list of sites.

Like "I'm feeling trendy." Your site might be trending, and appear #1. No keywords
          needed!

All kidding aside, you need a person to type in words in the search box. Those
          words are keywords.

      Hi OfficerIM,

Yes it is possible to rank a website in a website directory which, based on the wording of question, seems to be what you are asking. People are likely confused because you are asking the question in a Search Engine Optimization forum.

Rankings in web directories are based upon whatever category you submitted and typically some other factor like traffic volume or similar ranking metric.

If you actually meant to ask about ranking in search engines then there are some fundamental differences between web directories and search engines that your question, as asked, indicate you do not yet understand.

First and foremost, search engines do not rank websites, they rank individual web pages based upon relevance to a keyword search term. Sites that list and rank websites are known as web directories. What makes the two very different is the fact that search engines list individual pages and ranks based upon relevance to keywords. So, keywords are absolutely essential to keyword rankings in search engines.

Having said that, it is possible to rank individual web pages for really obscure keywords without actually having the keyword on your web page, as long as the keyword is included in at least one of the 4 primary signal groups, like in the page title meta tag, or in anchor text that links to the web page. Provided there is virtually no competition in the search engine for the really obscure keyword term.

I think anything is possible, but first we must understand what the ranking of a website? then you have to understand what are the keywords? then what is important for Google and users ... ranking or keywords? none of these, only information!

Keywords are essential for every search (text, images, videos, maps), but the ranking does not depend on keywords, visits and visitors depend on the keywords.

Just goes to show that certain articles on Wikipedia are written by people with limited knowledge on the topic.

This article on Wikipedia, which is a bit more accurate, contradicts that incorrect article on PageRank. If you look at some of the source documents, particularly the ones written by Brin and Page, you'll notice that they never mention indexing or ranking "websites". In fact, the only reference to "site", in their white paper on how search engines work, is in reference to emails received by webmasters referring to crawling a lot of pages on their "site". Not one mention ever of indexing or ranking websites, because that is not what they do.

The Wikipedia PageRank article was obviously written by an author that simply doesn't understand the fundamentals of how search engines work, I recommend that you take Page and Brin's whitepaper as a much more authoritative document, after all, not only did they invent PageRank, they also created the search engine now called "Google".

You have to write something in your website or at least google will asign some "keywords" to your website that will be shown in SERPs and it will be indexed but if you have no keywords how could you rank a website. No keywords No rank.

    Hey,

It is possible, but it would not be a great idea. When ranking, using really good keywords is a must.

Just being relevant and marketing to a specific audience will always perform much better than random search ranking if you ask me. I usually have great results ranking for one keyword at a time.

    Hope this helps!

OP you need the keywords to be somewhere so Google associates your own pages with the keywords.

An example would be a 1 page website, all your backlink pages need to include the keyword (ex: backlink page title, anchor-text, etc...) just the same as If you had the text on your own site/pages. Ranking a 1 page site is possible if you have decent link sources (99.99% off-page SEO), I still prefer maxing out on-page SEO before I start with external pages/links..

BTW, there's ways to add keywords to your own pages without looking spammy, example, image text caption, image alt-text which shows up as plain text on the G cache text version. Look at Wikipedia & how they do image caption text. Just one example.

If you don't want to target any keyword terms but just build backlinks to your website, your site may show up for any random keyword phrases. If you have a lot of content on the site, then you may find it ranking for long keyword phrases which do not have much search volume but collectively can bring you lot of traffic.

The answer of your question is No.
Rather than a whole website the popular search engine Google considers individual web pages for ranking. But the point is, if you don't have any keywords, then you rank for which search query?

if you don't define keyword in meta, Search Engines pick according to the content. At this moment, the keyword that search engine pick and have low bounce rate, will perform better and other will not. in this way, search engine will finally find out, what is your site deal with exactly, but the domain authority will matter a lot in this case.

Well, I do not understand, because with out keywords selection you can not rank your website.
Or you can atleast rank with your brand name.
