How bad did the last Google update hit you?

I have a site that was hit pretty hard. This site was ranking for its 4 main keywords on page 1 between spots 1-4. Now, I rank on page 10, 16, 21, 22 for these keywords. What happened to you? Did your site(s) take a beating or on the contrary?

Did your site recover?

A large number of people get hit by every update. The way forward is finding what guys did NOT get hit and doing what they do (which is using links you have full control over 100% of the time, which means no automated linking).

Google has incorporated randomness into their algorithm, so this won't work. Two sites can have the same backlink profiles and same on page SEO done on them, and one may perform better than the other. Also, when an update is released, one may get penalised and one may retain it's positions prior to the update. That's how it works now.

This is true, but guys like Becker and Glenn at Viper Chill run hundreds of sites and have reliable data that would account for things like randomness. Network Exclusive: How to Thrive After Penguin 2.1

I track about 200 sites in Serpfox and haven't seen any signs of an update that's worth mentioning in the last 45 days or so.

The last update took out the sub page site links for some reason (IE - Contact us, products etc), leaving just 1 link to the home page. Trying to figure out why..

My sites are still going strong, unaffected by the update.

I have so many traffic sources I don't notice half the time.

Does not matter if 1,000 people here say their site got hit because it also
means 1,000 sites would have moved up.

My main money sites were not affected because they have been way down in the SERPS for years. However I was getting most of my traffic from Yahoo Voices after Ezinearticles got hit in the previous update. Voices did get hit and I lost a lot of traffic. Then Yahoo announced that they are closing voices down at the end of the month which will just about finish me off.

I am desperately looking for either new traffic sources or a way to get my own sites up in the SERPS.

@laubster - yeah, you are right about no automated linking because that seems to be working less and less now. Becker and Glenn have the data to prove some things that we couldn't. Thanks for that links!

@Annomate - Do you mean those pages are not indexed anymore?

@SEO Power - I'm glad you are doing great! And yes, randomness is present more than ever now with Google.
