I receive many comments on my wordpress posts. Many of them ends with:

Stop by my homepage - <a href="...abc.........../" rel="nofollow">....xyz......</a>

My questions are:

(i) What does this mean, especially what is the significance of rel="nofollow"

(ii) Can't one just copy url from search engine & simply paste that url to get back link?

Is there good article available online to explain above?

If that code is from the comment from your website. I dunno if the site automatically put rel=nofollow on the link. That code is for search engine to not follow the link. Maybe some automated backlinking tools put that comment, thats why it is on an html form and you can see the code.

Suppose X has commented on Y's Blog (My site) giving link to X (his own) site.

So is it no follow from X to Y or Y to X

It is actually nofollow from Y to X. It is good to use nofollow tags because it prevents spamming. If some browsers are using your site or blog to gain traffic to a poorly ranked site, then it may affect the ranking or authority of your website. This is where nofollow tags come into play.

By default, all WordPress comments are "nofollow", i.e.: search engines won't give the links any juice.
