Is it bad that almost 90% of my traffic comes from Google images?

I have a site that heavily relies on Google images because it is in a niche that relies on images. Most posts I make get a lot of traffic for pictures because these rank among the first 5 on their search terms. Is this a bad thing in the long run?

    in my opinion yes, a bad thing in the LONG RUN. your business is under the control of a 3rd party, in this case google. what will happen to your business if google stops sending traffic today? and it never comes back?

    do not get me wrong, whilst you are there, MILK it. but put a large percentage of the money that you make into other avenues of traffic generation. google can be VERY fickle, and if 90% of your business depends on them you are living 100% at their mercy. your traffic may last for month's even years, but at some time most likely the algorithms will get you.

    start growing / advertising on pinterest, diversify your traffic sources starting today. also diversify your risk, build many more websites in the same niche and rank their pictures as well. should your main website tank in google, you have others that can take up the slack.

    so for now, enjoy it, but if you can get the stats to show that 90% comes from other sources (diverse sources) and only 10% comes from google you will sleep better at night

    Sometimes people use image search because they just want to steal your cute animal pictures and put them on their own blogs. But sometimes, people are genuinely looking for information (or products) that can be represented visually.
    If you’re running a business site/blog, you should always be thinking about how you can build a return audience with your content.

    @SEO rockzz – Most of my images are indeed original ones and are optimized correctly (or so I think). My niche is not a small one but not in a very competitive area as well. It’s somewhere in the middle but I probably rank high because of optimizing the images better than most of my competitors.

    @Origin – Advertising on Pinterest sound like a good idea. I will probably have to work towards not relying so much on Google images or Google in general. It’s interesting that you’ve said to build more sites in the same niche because I’ve been thinking about this. Could you share some tips for doing such a thing without making the sites look too similar to people and Google as well? Thank you!

      Use a different platform / cms for each, or at the very least different templates / themes. if you can, different hosts / domain registrars (or make them private) . rename image files / pages and do not duplicate the text / contact details in any way (using the same privacy policy for instance on all sites or the same email address) . You should have a unique site then.

    There is no rule that says you must diversify your traffic source.

    Like you said, the traffic is from mainly images because of the niche.

    Yes, Google can identify the duplicate images very easily!, but there's a way to go over it by downloading the image and then edit it with some photo editing software and then re-saving it under different extension, google will never now if the image is duplicate or not again! Try it yourself!

    It's a good thing actually because you have a non-traditional traffic source for your site. But, it'd be a bad idea to rely completely on that for traffic. Don't put all your eggs in the same basket - you never know what the big G might come up with in the near future.

    As you said you get a higher traffic from images just because of niche than its okay because there is not any rules for this. Traffic is traffic weather it is come from web search or image search who cares.......

    Something like 9gag ? Its a bad thing in the long run if you end up losing that source of traffic but since Google is loving you now, why do you care...go on and keep doing what you are doing.

    If your niche is about images then image search is what people are going to use and give you traffic.
