I use Google's keyword planner. I don't pay for keyword tools, but I always recommend long tail pro to anyone who needs a paid keyword tool. Yes, there is a free version of market samurai.

Since the implementation of the Moz stats it gained quite an edge on the competition.

Plus 1 for LTP, works great, but you could do the same thing with Google keyword planner and moz.

secockpit is another tool worth taking a look at, although it requires a monthly subscription.

Yes, I do. I think it is one of the best. I have used google keyword planner extensively, and when it was keyword tool.

The keyword planner is great, but takes a lot longer to go through versus LTP. Also I think google has managed to make the planner more complicated, and difficult to assess keywords than its earlier version which I loved. It was more straight to the point then.

I use it as a starting off point(for general keyword ideas at times) then I do LTP to narrow down the list. LTP is way quicker to assess especially if you have the platinum version which I have. As always even with LTP, you will need to check the top 10 competition, check at least the top few backlinks etc. I found the keyword competition or KC in the platinum version is right on target, and will save you time.

If I had to choose, I would pick LTP.

Google keyword planner is the best tool for keyword research. And another best tool is Wordstream keyword that allows you to target certain niches (groups of related keywords), gives you further suggestions, and also allows you to group them based off of a common theme for easy ad group launches.

  • My humble recommendation: Try the free versions of both Market Samurai and LTP. People here are going to tell you to use whatever they're sing, and rightly so. But find the one thats priced and has what you want--best. Either will be better than what you're using now, faster and more efficient.

    Good luck.

After you know the fundamentals of keyword research..you really don't need anything..

Better yet, once you understand seo and keywords...you hardly have to do keyword research aside from knowing the potential traffic. Since you can derive everything from the serps. Backlinks of course is nice to know. Don't get me wrong, these programs do supplement the process.

No way. Last time I used Long Tail Pro I was extremely unimpressed. To the point where I thought "this is the shittiest keyword app I've ever seen in my life". And I quickly uninstalled it.

I prefer my own custom built keyword app. It beats the shit out of LTP and is much closer to "SEO Cockpit" from Swiss Made Marketing (which I consider a "real" keyword app).

Long tail pro is the Best keyword tool I use regularly. But for your information long tail pro uses nothing but the google keyword tool. It is useful in finding low / medium competition keywords and to filter the long tail keywords. If you are expecting it to show you some different keywords which are not in google keyword tool you will be disappointed.

You can use google trends, ubersuggest, scrapebox keyword scrapper etc to find more relevant keywords and upload to long tail pro to find additional keywords which are not shown in google keyword tool when you search with generic keyword. One more way to get more keywords is to use google keyword tool with url as your competitor.

You probably need to login to your Google account, or you have sent too many requests to the server. Close the program, wait for 5 minutes, and then start it again. That should resolve the problem.

As for MS and LTP. Both are great. Statistically speaking Majestic is better than Moz, and the two most important figures that those two services give you - Traffic Flow and PageAuthority are actually connected to one another. It's just the formula that is different, which results in the two metrics showing different numbers. Whereas Page Authority under 40 is considered easy, in Traffic Flow numbers, that would be 20-22.

      LTP Pros:
You can have several seed keywords at once, unlike MS. The program will work fine if you put in less than 10 seed keywords.

LTP is also faster than MS. Those who use Samurai know that opening a tab can take a few seconds, which added to the few seconds needed to fetch SEO competition data can get frustrating.

      MS Pros:
There are more filters in the KW research tool. Whether they are useful or not is a subjective topic. Personally I find MS's KW research tool sleeker and more compact.

The SEO competition module has more metrics, and you can choose which to show and which are useless. For instance, most people only look at PR, backlinks to page, and on-page SEO. I also turn on a few of Majestic's data fields.
Also, the red/yellow/green coloring gives newbies a much easier and intuitive way of understanding the data. As long as the field is green and a bit yellow, you're all set to go. If it's red - you guessed it.

The truth is that you can get MS for free for 40 days an unlimited amount of times. Since the projects are locally stored on your computer, you will lose no data. All you need to do is create a few fake emails and register with those.

WHY I don't entirely agree with LTP - sometimes you will see that in the PR column a "no PR" message shows. I've never had this problem with Market Samurai.
EDIT: About the problem. If LTP shows no PR, MS would show 0 PR. When you create a fresh new website, you don't start from 0 PR. Instead you have to get crawled by Google, and then you will get assigned a PR value.

So this is pretty much it. In general, those are the two best KW research tools. Of course, they are both based on Google's Keyword tool, but they have features that exceed Google's power.

As for any other KW research tools - I haven't tried them and I'm not an expert so I can't say anything. All I can say is that 90% of the marketers which make a large full-time living from websites, use one of these two tools. So if I were you, I'd make a choice between this two, take the time to go through some educational videos, and take full advantage of the tool.

P.S I use both tools - LTP for finding low competition KWs and MS for further analyzing SEO competition, finding content and Amazon/Clickbank products.

Yo ucan check your competitors which keyphrases they are targetting for, there are hundreds of LT as well you can find. if you continue to use tools that are based on keyword planner you will continue to get results the millions of others are getting - dismal

you are all fighting over the same keywords to rank because you all use the same information

you need to think out of the box and using keyword planner results is insanity while expecting to get different results

run away from anything that uses google keyword planner results no matter how pretty the software is

Use google keyword tool.. its free and you can do the rest manually.

    1. find your desired keyword, then google that keyword
    2. See if the sites that come up have the keyword in their titles and meta description
    3. if not then this could be a easy to rank keyword
    4. if some do have it.. then check their backlinks with backlinkwatch or w/e .. if their backlinks are targeted specificly to that keyword then this website is doing targeted SEO for that keyword.. so do your math and decide
    5. ......?
    6. profit
