How To Rank For Local Results?

I've selected a lot of low competition keywords appropriate for my business, but I can't seem to find any local keywords. Nearly all of them are high competition or have very low monthly searches. I hope that my fellow warriors can bestow their supreme intelligence upon my uninformed head and and suggest what I should do in this case.

Also, is there any distinct difference between attempting to rank for local or global searches besides the focus on local keywords?

I'm targeting the state level (NJ), by the way.

    To find local keywords, append the city name like best place to buy shoes in London. Local keywords are often long tail keywords so choose accordingly.

    • I agree with guptakeepak2353 in using long tail keywords that target your local area. This accomplishes two things:
      • Reduces competition for longer keyword phrases and
      • Allows you to try and rank for other shorter keyword phrases.
      By using long tail keywords that are location specific you can really target keyword phrases that have low competition. I'm not sure what your business is, but as an example:


      affordable lawn care services in Trenton, NJ


      If someone types that in exactly, there's a good chance your site will come up if you have decent on-page optimization for that phrase. But you also have a chance to rank for the following keyword phrases:
      • lawn care
      • lawn care services
      • affordable lawn care
      • affordable lawn care services
      • lawn care services in Trenton
      • lawn care services in Trenton, NJ
      • affordable lawn care services in Trenton
      By focusing on the local, you automatically include the "global" range of keyword phrases.

  • You can use local business listing, Local Classified ads techniques for get best results.
  • Each business strategy is different.
    1. I sketch from zero all the work starting with the keywords analysis.
    2. Move to content/contexts/headlines.
    3. If It's a local business that's better - go with the Google map listing which is very important. If not I skip that. and go just with Google Authorship in both cases.
    4. Follow the CTA (Call-to-Action) - Link Structure (Build linking relationship between on site pages to improve linkability ) - Site architecture - Action Ratio. All need to have a very good connection.
    5. Optimize each web page using Yoast Pro or other SEO framework
    6. Tracking the performance of conversions on the site
    7. Make recommendations for off page optimization. Contact Local - Regional - National Bloggers where we can't influence anchor texts, widgets or BIOs.
    8. Start the Social Pages. Go and start campaigns by demographic areas and if possible after niche.
    9. Try to gain some influencers on our G+ page so we can have a good share integration.
    10. Community services. Integrate on top forums and actually bring value to the boards. Forget about the backlinks benefit. Actually give really good results, really good value to what we post,answer there to gain trust, awareness.
    11. Digg for natural links. This keeps the engines active no matter what.
    12. No follow attribute for all the backlinks build out there.
    13. Classic SEO momentum - Turn the CTA(Call-to-Action) to a valid Click!
    14. Distribute content. Rich content, with more than 500 words!
    15. Interact with social activity - go to charity, spread flyere, become known local - and get listed on Chamber of Commerce website!

    • I should have mentioned, the business will be based on state level (New Jersey), and it will be an online agency - so no specific address.

      What would be the best way to track the conversion rate?

      I already compiled a list of keywords. I used keyword planner to add a few new long tail keywords that specify new jersey. I'm assuming that if I chose the keywords appropriately and have other seo imperatives in order, it will be enough to rank my site for local results, correct?

  • If you want local search results, do business listing and needs NAP, it means Name, Address, and Phone number. Effective way to local result and get best local searches and traffic.

  • May be it takes time. So, start with local classified, business listings and social media to get temporary traffic.

  • The best place to target for local search is Google maps of course. That is where most people search when they are looking for a business locally.   • Google Maps optimization involves building perfectly matched NAP citations. Local SEO is like normal SEO but for city/state/county keywords (some differences, but mainly about the type of links you build). Plenty of good resources here re: both.
  • To Rank For Local Results, follow these onpage & offpage optimization strategies:

    On page:
    • Create Geo Targeting web pages.
    • Use city name and zip code in metas
    • Use Local language content on webpage.

    Offpage:
    • Local citation listing submission
    • Business listing submission
    • Google+ local listing
    • Yelp listing (very important)
    • Local Classified ads

      If you are a local business, you should let Google understand this. Start with Geo targeted optimization of your website - include location to your keywords (make sure to choose location as most of people refer to it - e.g., New York, NY, NYC etc), add the address of your business to the website , include GEO keywords to the content etc. Then, add your business to Google Local Businesses https://www.google.com/local/business/, Yahoo! Local Listings and other local catalogues.

  • Google has just recently rollout their new algorithm related to local search, named as Pigeon Algo on 24, July 2014. So follow all the guidelines related to it and you can rank well for your local search. Other than this, try to use long tail keyword including place name.
    Adding to this, do submission in local site like citation, local directory submission, classified ads, etc.
    Along with this, do share your content on social media sites like facebook, twitter, linked In, etc.

    • Many people don't realize that Google alters a user's search results depending on whether or not they are searching with local intent. Google actually has a local search algorithm that is very different from its regular ranking algorithm. Great tips!

    First we need to register in google local listing, once it is done, we can do SEO. These results will be displayed based on the area location.

    Well, I don't think that there is any need about asking user up for "Ranking for the local results" I would say what you can do is make sure you have listed yourself all over the local listing sites. First of all try searching about local listing sites over the Google which i am sure that you are going to get tons of results. Once you get the list select the best listing sites which you think submission is going to worth once you select it put yourself over it all done ! One more think make sure you have listed yourself over the Google and Yahoo local listing sites.

  • Get local with a Google+ business page and verify your business. It tells other that your business is present locally. Analyze your keywords with local places including. They may be long tail keywords. For exapmle, if you are searching for book stores then book stores in NJ, Book stores in US can bring results. But make sure those keywords are in searches and in trend. Optimize your website according to keywords and appropriate URL's.

    Do local business listings. Build Backlinks from Authoritative websites.
