competitor backlinks - how much is too much?

I just had a stroke of genius (well, I don't know if it will work yet) and I think I found a good way for me to find profitable niches, but putting the top competitor into backlinkwatch, I see he has 4755 backlinks.

I think I know the answer, but I want confirmation.

Is it worth it to pursue this keyword? Would you pursue this keyword?

If so, how long would it take you to get into the top 3 if you kept backlinking your own site?

If that many backlinks is too many backlinks to pursue, what do you consider beatable when it comes to google rankings and backlinking?

Hard to say that as the backlinkwatch return the total number of backlinks even if they all are coming from the same site. So it could be just one "run of site" link on a site with 4755 pages

I usually determine the strength of a domain by doing a link:www.domain.com query in Google (although it returns only strong links i can get an idea about the links by comparing this number to my websites) and try to do a search for your keywords in quotes in google (for example, "cool blue widgets") to get an idea how many pages are optimized exactly for this keyword. If there are around 20.000 pages, it is pretty easy to hit at least the first page with some linkbuilding (within 2 week up to 3 months ). I usually go for everything under 100.000 but it can take some time and need some work to rank well for these

www.linkdiagnosis.com is by far the best backlink tool I've used. Make sure you get the Firefox extension

Interesting site Netcel. One of the problems that I find with Yahoo SiteExplorer is that it counts multiple backlinks from the same domain. Link Diagnosis say that they aggregate them into one. This should make the numbers more accurate. Quote from linkdiagnosis FAQ below:

"If you have site-wide link across a big site then Yahoo SiteExplorer will report thousands of links. Link Diagnosis will report only one link so the report loads quicker"
