Suggestions for local fitness center

A friend of mine reached out for my help. I'm, by no means, an seo expert, but I'm definitely a lot handier on a computer than he is. He really more of a fitness expert than anything. He moved his fitness center and changed the name. I think that may have turned out to be a mistake because he's complaining now that his ranking has fallen dramatically. Of course, with the new business name came a new website and new domain name.

His original domain was cflockednloaded.com, which was ranked 4th overall when you do a google search for crossfit sherwood ar. The new domain, Crossfit Gym, Weightlifting - incendiary Crossfit - Sherwood, Ar, is ranked 12th on a google search for crossfit sherwood ar.

I figured maybe some language on the new website referencing the old business name might help? Any suggestions?

Try a 301 redirect from the old domain to new site, should allow him to keep the old traffic and authority. Add another relevant expired domain with a PR 4/5 and decent links etc and 301 that from a different hosting account then he should be able to rank ok as it's a specific low competition term.

I am just learning but the numerous sources I've researched suggest this as being the best and quickest method on a single site/niche

Most likely the old business had citations pointing to it in directories like Yelp, Foursquare, iBegin, Brownbook, etc. You need to track those down and change them or create new ones for the new business.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. One question that remains unanswered is should he mention the old business name and old website in the new website? Will that help?

It won't help so it's not necessary as the 301 is enough to help him regain his former rankings. Nevertheless, it may help with sales if potential customers looking for the old website stumble upon the new one.

I've had the same problem when I've changed my domain name. But in time I've gained back the position and got even higher.

He just needs to be patient and do a bit of SEO for the new domain. Nothing too strenuous though, because it might not look natural for a new domain.

Just be patient and take things slowly, and he will definitely regain his rankings.

If any previous site visitors remember the name and happen to input that into the browser bar, it would help as Google will likely take them to the highest ranked site that mentions that name. Then again, as mentioned earlier if the site is listed on Yelp or any other local directory, one of those sites will be coming up. So be sure all those pages are updated with the new address for the site.

301 redirect. <-- if you don't know what this is, find out, and do it.
