Getting backlinks from high pr and authority .edu sites are always crucial as it's one of the ranking factors mentioned by Google.

Uhhh I should of known not to mention the edu TLD lol. I'm trying to establish whether or not a page with no internal links going to it will output PR etc when linking to an external site....

I know at one time .gov and .edu backlinks were all the craze. They helped people rank better for their keywords in a much shorter time.

That said, these days who knows anymore. Every time Google makes a change the backlash on sites is tremendous. Then you have to try and figure out what still works and what you need to change.
