What's the Worst Mistake YOU've Made in SEO?

Hey SEO Warriors,

We always learn from our past. Is there any particular mistake that you've made comes to your mind which costed you big time?

Mine would be.. Lack of security. I had a good authority site which had a few high ranking pages. I'd put all my eggs in one basket and gone all in with the site, but it got hacked and hacker stuffed awful spammy links in my pages which only the Google spider could see. I found it one day looking at it from Google's cache, spammy links were all over the site. My site rankings had taken a big tumble and I had no idea why but this explained it. I'm not sure how exactly it got compromised but it might've been a keylogger that gave the hacker access to my FTP or maybe it was a server leak.

    • What do you mean by buy backlinks from Fiverr? I've heard friends saying by linking to wrong websites, it will kill our website.
  • I have made a lot of mistakes and still making them, but not a single one qualifies for "worst" because its been a learning curve for me and I got back way more than I lost.

      Noindexing a whole bunch of sites by accident cause I used the SEO Yoast plugin to noindex pages and I forgot that my sites were based on static (home)pages. Kind of silly.
    • That's a great perspective. That's the key I guess, learning from the mistakes and having the mindset of getting back way more than we lose and staying at it. Persistence pays - that's for sure!
  • I used duplicate content for one of my website and that cost me a lot... Now I use content from other sites only for some reference and ideas and never put those contents in my website.

  • The worst thing one could possibly do concerning SEO is purchase horrible links. My god, the consequences just isn't worth it.
  • I too have made a lot of mistakes but have learned from them which is what it is all about I guess. If I had to pick one I guess it would be purchasing a website quite some time ago that was over 3000 pages built with frames that took forever to re-design after google changed the playing field and it never did get back the seo rank it had before frames were taboo. But hey live and learn right?
