I usually just google the keyword and check out the pages that come up on the first page of Google.

manual is the best and quickest way imo. If you want metrics like volume and stuff then adwords kwtool or whatever they're calling it these days.

For me the best software to find keywords and measure the competition of the keyword has got to be

    Longtail pro

It's a great piece of software and will save you a ton of time finding keywords and checking the competition.

Tools are good but after finding keywords from tools, I am just checking keywords manually. It's a good way to find keywords..

As a quick check, I usually check the search volume of a keyword to determine if it's a high or low competition keyword. Most keywords that get searched more than 5,000 times per month tend to have a sizable number of sites competing for 1st page spots for them.

Use long tail pro if you want to see a pretty accurate competition estimate of any keyword while doing keyword research. You can also do it manually (highly recommended) even after using a tool.

Open a browser & do an incognito search for your keyword, the page that's ranked #1 is your competition.

Scrape a list of the top 10 results for your desired keyword. Manually inspect each one's backlinks in a backlink checker, check for quality and type of backlinks,

Export backlink profile, check the PR of each backlink URL and calculate average PR for each of top 10's backlinks.

PR alone can't be the only deciding factor because it's so far out of date. We still have to manually inspect each site.

For example, if you see a link profile that has primarily recently made PR NA backlinks from mega authority sites like NYTimes, or Huff Post that would warrant an estimation of what the real (higher) PR might be if actually current.

Check the age of each domain. Calculate the average domain age for the top 10 results or just eyeball it. The lower the better, it's always a good sign if Google's ranking newly created sites high in the SERP.

Look for affiliate or low quality sites ranking highly. This is usually a sign that you'll be able to outdo your competition by delivering a superior site to users.

I look at keyword competitiveness from an organic SEO perspective. I want to know how hard will it be for me to get my site to rank in the non-paid SERPs.

The main things I look at when determining keyword competitiveness are Google AdWords data (especially search volume), and the quality of the sites that rank well organically for that keyword phrase. I then do a direct comparison with the site I'm working with against the top organically ranking sites to give me an idea of how far I have to go. I also like to look at related long-tail keywords, because the competition and performance can vary greatly.

      Best,
      MoNaseer.

      Hi sugaonline,

Yes, Keyword Planner is for AdWords advertisers, but it does give you a good ideal of the general level of competitiveness of a keyword as it relates to commercial intent, which can be very useful for SEO, right? Now it doesn't tell you who you competitors are, but there is another tool, designed for advertisers that can give you an indication of your top competitors, not only in the sponsored ad space, but also organic listings: Ad Preview and Diagnostics Tool

If you want to pursue a certain keyword for your site, the best way to do is to check its global/monthly searches and competition level (if you want to have an ad campaign). List down the keywords you want and then check it manually on who will be your top competitors for that keyword/s. After that, analyze and choose the best keywords that more likely to fit your site. And then that's it, you can start from there.
