My Secret Formula For Keyword Research

Mind you, I don't teach theory. I test and test and test. When I find something that works, I did it over and over again.

A while back I took all of the posts on my blogs and ran their keywords thru this formula

intitle:"keyword" inurl:"keyword" inanchor:"keyword"

The ones that ranked within 2 weeks all fell around the same number of competition. The ones that took a month, seem to fall under the same number and so and so on.

I then put this to the test by ONLY choosing keywords that would rank within 2 weeks, according to the formula. Low and behold...9 of the posts hit page 1 within 12 days.

Before it was hit and miss, but I had effectively removed all guess work.

Intitle:"keywords" works, but your real competition are those covering all three keyword bases. Everyone else is half-arsin it.

100 or less competitors seems to be the sweet spot.

ESPECIALLY WITH VIDEO!

EDIT: I wanted to add this for those that doubt...I don't teach theory, if I'm not doing it with success, I'm not teaching it. I have results, and so do my students.

  • I'm following a similar technique that was created by Kyle and Carson, the owners of Wealthy Affiliate and the Jaaxy keyword tool. You have to search for the keyword in quotes and click to the last page of the results to see the real number of results for that keyword.

Under 100 results seems to be the sweet spot.

    • That's very true, well done, because a lot of people that that initial number as gospel!

    • just tried this method, I wonder why Google shows you a bigger result until you get to the last page of results though?

What do you mean by 100 competitors/results?
    • [2] replies
    • Competitors/results is the number of results displayed at the top of the results page.

I use this for quick checks while looking for keywords with very low competition, but I don't rely on this alone. I do the usual top 10 results analysis.
    • Yes when you use the formula, google will tell you how many other sites etc have that keyword in the title, anchor text, and url

That is the number of TRUE competitors

  • I wish I had this luxury I'm in real estate and we all need the exact same keywords to get our business. I still look for "backdoor' combinations but the competition has gotten so high that they are now ultra competitive.

It was so much easier during the real estate bust...

    • Have you tried zip codes, school districts, or even the type of keywords that have dates or years attached?
  • How long are these keyword phrases usually for you to get less than 100 competitors? That seems like a VERY tiny number.

    • They typically have less than 500 monthly searches, mostly below 200 searches. But those searches do add up when you succeed in ranking for several or many of them.

    • You be surprised. There are keywords like "productname review" with 1000 searches a month and 100 competitors, because no is even thinking about selling the product.

It's not an ebook, or on amazon...or cpa so they aren't interested.

      But mostly buyer keywords.

  • There are only 10 competitors for ANY keyword.

Those numbers don't mean anything, there could be only 100 sites in existence targeting your keyword, that doesn't mean you will outrank the top 10.

  • Great strategy. Did you do much in the way of backlinking to get the ranking?

What kind of competition were you able to achieve the ranking in 2 weeks?

What kind of competition were you able to achieve the ranking in a month?

Though only the first 10 results really count, the site where I applied this very basic keyword research (simply cause I had 100's of keywords to chose from) is doing better then the affiliate sites where I didn't apply it so on a large scale it has some benefits.

However once you aim to really rank in the top 3 it becomes completely useless.

There's an old patent that says when you have have a link from a page already ranking in the top 50, or top 100 or whatever that it's stronger then a link from a page not ranking at all. So if all your pages rank in the top 100 cause there are only 100 results it might give some benefit cause of the internal linking.

    • Thanks, not much backlinking is needed for most of the terms, but I throw 100 links at everything I do initially anyway, since my software care do it.

But in my 7 day case study, my friend got a page 1 ranking that lasted an entire year, and she only built 4 links, manually. And it was her very first time. That site went on to make her $28.

Which is why it kinda frustrates me to see naysayers posting here with their theory.

People are dying to find success, get the &u@k out of the way please
    • I forgot to answer the other two questions, sorry

100 or less is usually guaranteed page 1 in two weeks, usually sooner with video though

I can get my BACKLINKS to page 1 in about 6 days sometimes using the keywords as the titles

And as you can see by my students testimonial, he usually ranks top 3 or 4.

My videos usually take spot 1-4, my backlinks sometimes blanket the entire page.

And for one month, for a video, a couple thousand competition

And mid hundreds to high hundreds for websites, self hosted.

I haven't gone after anything higher with websites, only video.

I have a video on page 1 for a keyword that has 64,000 competition, in the formula

Took me about 8 months to get to page 1, with a video.
  • Are you doing everything manually or using any tool for further filtering as well?
    • [1] reply
    • The competition analysis is done manually, but you could whip up a script from ubot that will do this for you no problem
  • It`s good idea, but I am using for look for such keyphrases MarketSamurai "golden rules" most of the keyprhases filtered by this arre pretty easy and rank fast. It`s just faster way to get more phrases at once.

  • Hi Loopholemarketers

Very interesting post and tried the method and was thrilled to learn a new and good method of KW research where i have been struggling for a very long time

However, with reference to videos, as you mentioned, these keywords would generally not be having YT vids on the first page of google while appearing on the first page of YT

Is there any assurance that these vids while appearing on 1st page of YT will also appear on 1st page of google automatically
