A few questions about niche backlinks and geo targeting

question 1. As the title suggest I'm having trouble finding niche specific sites to get backlinks from. I am currently 1 rank below the google places result and 1 more jump in rank will put me above the fold = $$$. the competitor is outranking me with a yelp listing, a listing to his website and a facebook listing. I did analysis on his website and it is not seo friendly at all ( no backlinks no h tags, only 2-3 pages). I have been trying to build backlinks to my site but am having trouble. Is it just a waiting game and I will eventually over take 1 of his positions or do I absolutley need backlinks to get ahead of him?(even though he has none, possibly ranking because of domain age)?

question 2. I am a locksmith company so I'm targeting towns, how does geo targeting work? does google pick up on the location + keyword terms in my pages and automatically display them to users who type in "locksmith" in that given area or do they have to put "locksmith+town" even if located in the area?

here is my website and the specific url I'm talking about.(trying to rank for "locksmith brockton") Locksmith Brockton MA

Thanks in advance for any help

Welcome to the forums, Spartan... You may want to edit your very first post here so it doesn't include a hyperlink so it doesn't look like an attempt at link spam ....Since you are actively trying to build backlinks.

Second thing... And this is a BIGGIE.

What % of visitors that you are currently getting are actually reaching out for your services? How many leads per day is your site generating? How many customers per week?

Many people get caught up on 'traffic' and 'rankings' when the biggest thing that can revolutionize your business is increasing your conversions.

You see... If your site is delivering zero leads and zero sales right now... You get better rankings and more traffic... Guess how many leads and sales you will generate with that additional traffic. ZERO!

So I would recommend that you get very clear about what the goal is of your site and take steps to get more people (that are already visiting your site) to reach that goal. Then, start tracking how often that goal is achieved. (you can't improve that which you don't measure)

Is it a phone call? If so, are you tracking phone calls that are generated from your site compared to calls generated by other ads? (for example, a unique number for the website so you know when it converts)

I noticed your phone number on the home page, but when I clicked through to a blog post, it went away... What is someone to do who finds your blog post to get in touch with you? Don't see a 'contact us' link on your navigation... Dig around for your info? ...They just may hit back.

I also bet you get some 'emergencies' from time to time (probably an understatement)... Maybe keys locked in the car with it running, or locked out of the house with the kettle on... lol. You've probably had some funny ones.

Well, what about having an 'EMERGENCIES' nav. option that helps people realize how dedicated you are to your business and how you can help people out of their emergencies FAST. Followed by a special 'Emergency Number' that calls your office, house, cell, etc all at the same time (Google Voice can do this for you for free)

Now that person in the emergency who finds your site thinks to themselves... "Wow, this guy get's me and understands I'm in a bind and I need him here FAST" and your number is right there.

Bingo, the moment that aligns in their head, your phone will ring.

Last thing.... By staying super focused on rankings, you may end up over optimizing and hurting your rankings because Google is 'looking out' for people trying to game the system....

Once you know your site converts 3 visitors out of every 200, you can then start paying for clicks confidently... And all the raking worries go right out the window.

Just some food for thought... And I'm sure most the pro's would agree that a site that converts traffic is more valuable than a site that gets traffic and doesn't convert.

Thanks for the long reply and point well takin about emergency contact. I'm not sure about my conversion but I would say between 2-5 calls a day at the moment, not every call is a job closed. I need more call volume and fast. The reason ranking are important is because when people search for locksmiths they often times call the first few they see, the rest get lost in the fold with near 0 call volume.

Also I have tried looking for niche related forums to post my backlinks and they all have a policy against it. Its roving very difficult to find legit ways to generate backlinks for my business. Also forgot to mention that ppc is not an option for me, the spammers and national companies have some kind of software to commit click fraud on a massive scale and drive us under. Already tried it and lost thousands almost went out of business.
