So Ahrefs Domain Rank Not so worthless after all? Pity not even better but still could save time

Okay so like most SEOs I have kind of ignored Ahrefs rank system. A few years ago it was mystical (in a bad way) . Some might even say mythical. It had no rhyme or reason and to this day I don't think its as good as it should be given Ahrefs has one of the best link coverages available on the net ( Moz just can't hold a candle to them)

Anyway I recently decided to do a test because honestly metrics are a mess right now. (Even Majestic's Trustflow which used to be very very good is getting unreliable)

NOTE: before we get the usual "I didn't red the thread but one should never buy or build links (or domains for a PBN) based on metrics" - yes OF COURSE always check the backlinks but with millions of domains and link pages its a way to filter out what you don't need to check

So I ran my test putting DR (Ahref's Domain Rank) through the paces and heres what I found

A DR of under 30 was pretty much always a dog. Still testing but it so far seems to me that using a DR of 30 or below to weed out domains to buy wouldn't be a bad idea and kind of makes the metric a bit more worthwhile than I thought a year ago.

It makes sense. With Moz you can get a low score like a DA 10 or 15 (which ahem....unbelievably some PBN sellers are claiming as powerful domains. I guess when those get harder to find they will claim DA 5s are powerful) but actually have a stronger domain in reality - because Moz misses a ton load of links

Since ahrefs coverage is much better if they still can't find good links to a domain they probably really don't exist.

All good?

Nah 31-40 DR is a crap shoot . not very reliable at all. Not total dogs but the raking system doesn't do a good job of grading upwards. Like if Google (when they used to update their toolbar ) said a domain (home page of course) was a PR3 it was always going to have better links than a PR2. Well DR 35 just might have better links than a DR 40. It does get better at 50 plus but it will all depend on what you are looking for. It s just not a progressive system where a higher number necessarily means a better domain.

Why?

A few things that seem to plague all the third party link and domain checkers

A) They all seem to suck at identifying nofollow (why I have no idea...its right there in the HTML
B) Many of them take too long to drop the links they did count but have been lost. Kind of like pagerank is now. I have Pr4s that no longer have any links from last year May
C) Most services do a very bad job (as someone else pointed out) at figuring out how link juice flows within a site.

So for now anyway for me Ahref's DR is most useful in just weeding out the total dogs I wouldn't want to buy.

Thats something at least. I'll continue testing but that by itself would be a time saver especially on dropped domains.

I have always trusted Ahrefs authority metrics and backlink reports more than any other link research tool, and I've used their url rank and domain rank metrics during my expired domain purchases to filter out the bad or low quality domain names. DR 40+ domains tend to be strong, and 50+ very strong.

Always? Nope only if you are new to ahrefs. Their metrics were horrible a few years ago. Their last update seemed to have changed that.

      • AHREFs Domain Rank is basically a measure of how well a particular domain ranks relative to all other tracked domains, i.e. a Domain Rank of 70 means that it ranks better than 70% of all domains.

Haven't used ahrefs for much except to actually check backlink profiles. May have to give their metrics a try with my domain buying efforts.

Generally I would use them as a complement to Majestic for Referring Domains and Backlinks. Also has a nice redirect feature. Think of Majestic, Moz and Ahrefs as the three credit bureaus.
