Google: Weird Indexing Games

I am not quite sure if it is me or Google, but I would really appreciate some guidance.
Never in my IM career had I the problem of getting my pages indexed in Google. I always strive to write good and quality content, I add the sitemap through Google Webmasters and within sometime I get indexed and ranked. I tend to build backlinks at this stage.
Lately however, I seem to build a site like before. Wordpress, quality content, SEO plugins, sitemap. I proceed to submit the sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools and within 3-5 days my main page is indexed. I continue to add more relevant content and it seems like these pages get indexed as well, at least initially. The problem however, is that these pages are not anywhere in the Google rankings. A few days later, for some unknown reason, my pages simply diseappear from Google alltogether. It is like they are de-listed for no apparent good reason.
The last example involves one of my established PR3 sites. I added a fresh new article and within an hour it was indexed and ranked 41st on Google.com. That was 3 days ago. Today it is no where to be found. So I went into Google Webmasters Tools and saw that this latest page of mine was not indexed by Google. Whenever I type site:domainname.com/pagename into Google, I get the same result, the page is not in the index.
Can someone explain to me, what is going on? What am I doing wrong? Why are my pages getting indexed only to de-index a day or so later? Has anybody been experiencing the same horrendous results?
