Title tag vs article title

So, just got into SEO lately and I've been getting the hang of it, only that I can't seem to find any info about how title tags and article ttle work.
To clarify, what I've found out is, title tags is what shows on top of the browser and more importantly, on Google.
Article title is actually the title of your page,like at the top of your page.
What I've been wondering is, is it ok to have these 2 different from each other ?
I've read somewhere that doing that might get penalty by Google since that might indicate "fake title".
Anyone ?

  • It would not make sense to make it different... A title is already a H1 tag and you want to have 1 H1 tag in the source of your site.
  • Title tag and article titles can be written differently but you should remember that title tag should represent the about the content in the article and should not be different form it.
  • Oh , what I want to do is to write the title tag for the SE and the article tag for reader. Kinda
  • You're not really going to get a different title that is viewed vs what a search engine sees... they've learned to identify content that isn't visible to users and ignore it

      It makes sense to have different text for both a <title> & <h1> because both those tags can be switched out as the SERP title. Since both tags can be switched out for the SERP title you can target 2 variations of the same keyword per page. So now the 1 page is highly optimized for two traffic sources (2 keywords).





      Exactly... relevancy is strong when it comes to ranking pages, especially when your trying to rank multiple pages for very similar keywords.




      It's a <title> tag & <h1> tag, there's no article title tag.





      That's not necessarily true, an <h1> tag (text) can be forced to show up as a SERP title. The <h1> doesn't have to be directly visible, example, it could be inside of a tab on a page, or a drop down content like on an FAQ page, etc... there's different situations depending on how the page is setup.
  • They can be different from each other and it's ok so far as both of them are similar in meaning. For example,

    Your title tag could be 'How To Lose Weight Fast'

    Your article title could be '5 Effective Ways To Lose Weight Fast'

    Use a WordPress SEO plugin to specify your title tag. Your article title is the title you entered while creating the page/post.

  • Your first question, of course it's okay. I can't fathom why anyone would even do them the same, if
    they were doing things manually.

    Second question, I don't know where (on Earth) you could possibly have read, unless
    you were following some clueless person. Sadly, it happens.

    You don't have to make your h1 the title of your article. People would only assume that the words
    above the start of an article "might" be the title. But many articles have several "titles" and
    subtitles.

    I would even go as far as to say, "Why waste SEO space using the same text for h1 and title tag?"
