Best way of getting links?

Hi I have just started getting links to my site but do not know what is the best way to go about it in terms of time and effectiveness. At the moment I am just emailing individual webmasters.

What do people think are the best methods (say top three)?

Also I know that you can use these link exchange sites but would this just involve emailing each webmaster individually i.e. would it be quicker?

Other methods i have heard about are forums, paying for links, blogs, social bookmarking and article submission.

  • Content is king. I find that when I post engaging content, people link to it. Posting outbound links is good, too, because a lot of webmasters will scratch your back if you scratch theirs.
  • Do a search here on the forums for just a couple things:

    Angela's backlinks and social bookmarking

You should be able to find a ton of info if you do that.

    Good luck!
  • I would check out angela's and paul's backlink guides for a start.

Bring the pages your competing with for your keyword up in yahoo using:

    link:theirdomain here

I can't provide a full link at this time.

See where they've gotten their backlinks and attempt to copy them. Whether it's blog commenting, some web 2.0 hosts, etc..

    Cheers
  • in-mark, there's many resourceful posts here on the warrior forum explaining some great ways to acquire backlinks, many of them free.

Other than manually e-mailing webmasters (as others have suggested), you can do article marketing, blog commenting, forum posting, a whole range of things which will increase the number of your inlinks. The trick is to diversify. Don't just stick to one method of link building - use many different methods so that Google will see your site acquiring a natural portfolio of links.
  • Hi thanks for the useful info will defo look into some of that. What is forum posting by the way?

Also something else has arisen which I feel is quite relevant. If I am trying to get links from webmasters on an individual basis then if it is only important what the page rank is of the page that he/she is using to link to me by then it is unlikely that a PR 4 or 5 website is going to link to you from their PR 4 or 5 webpage (normally their homepage). Instead they would probably link to you from a links page with a PR of 0. If this is the case you might as well do article marketing and get hundreds of links from PR 0 websites in one go and so at least it would be more efficient?

I say this because all the pages in my website are PR 0 and I don't feel like anyone is going to link to a PR 0 webpage from a PR 4 or 5 webpage. I could be wrong here.
  • Well forum posting is what you're doing now..but you should include your url in the signature part of your profile..go to your profile page to edit this..

Exactly what type of site are you marketing? blog, application or what.

    • you have the beware with forum signatures though. Google is cracking down on anchor text overuse. So either barely post your signature with an anchor,, or post a straight url

  • I do also agree that Angela Experiment does help you with back links. Great source to start out with especially for a noob.
  • paying for PR5 homepage link helps my serp significantly..
  • Here's some things you can do in addition to contacting other webmasters.

    1. Directory submissions
    2. Forum postings
    3. Blog posting
    4. Social bookmarking
    5. Article writing and posting on article sites
  • You can also use web 2.0 sites Squidoo, Hubpages, Treemo- just to name a few.

    • I urge you to do the following:

      1. article marketing
      2. social bookmarking
      3. directory submission

you can search for more relevant information on the above in this forum.
    • Hi thanks some great advice there. With regards to forum posting. What is the best way to go about this?

I presume this is the way to go
      1) Put my links at the bottom of all my posts so that helps my google rankings
      2) Network as much as possible, make friends with people, fill out my profile
      3) Ask people people for link requests if they are in the same or similar industries to myself?

I assume this is all there is to it. If there is anything I am missing out please let me know. Once again thanks for your help. Love this forum!
  • For a link building campaign to be successful, you would have to consider relevancy and the PR of a site. It is always best to secure links on sites within your niche. Article submissions will also help but you have to make sure that aside from doing mass submissions, you also submit exclusive content to directories like EZA etc.
  • Forums are the best way to get links, in my opinion. You can get tons of forum links, and you never have to wait to get them. The only downfall is that some of the links are not relevant, however, this is not that big of a deal. Any link is better than no link, and it's still going to move you up the search engines.
  • Forums only has little value but still it is part of link building...
  • To my experience, your emails will not be entertained from webmasters as you are newbie. First try to get links to your website, increase PR and then ask for link exchange.

The most important thing, do not expect that you will stumble to higher rankings in short time period(week or a month). You need to give considerable efforts to your website promotion strategies.

  • i think social bookmarking sites are so easy way to get backlinks.
  • Content is not always king, as some put it. You need to promote your site before you get those free links, as a result of good content.

There's also another problem with that statement. Because people are increasingly careful of who they are linking to. Gaining recognition takes time, doing that time, you may as well do some linkbuilding on your own.

Natural search doesn't exist, you have to be a fool to leave things to pure chance. Any SEO would know that. But having that said, content sure is important, very important.

I would recommend stumbleupon for traffic. And then free directories, article submissions, forums, and finally blogs, for backlinks. Be sure to think about the anchor text, having a relevant anchor text, is far more important then having a bunch of links.
  • Angela and Paul's backlinks are all you need. I speak from experience...

    js
  • I have actually subscribed to Angelas backlinks now. Been doing some article marketing and social bookmarking too.
  • I don't think Paylinks & Articles submissions work fine on these days.... I have noticed google has started to hate those.... However, blog commentings & Social bookmarks really helps a lot. :p
  • You are welcome to add a link to our site. our traffic has increase 10 fold in the last week, so its not entirely a new site - still young tho. Just login and you will see a menu that allows you to add a link. It needs to be PG rated!
  • The absolute best way of getting links is to write (or have written for you) high quality content that is linked to by other webmasters. This is exactly what Google is trying to accomplish with their constantly updated algorithm. As a result you can virtually future-proof your site using this whitehat method without any fear that Google is going to get smarter and discount the links you worked so hard to manually build.

  • I have a new site too and here are what I did:

    1. set up a wordpress blog and keep updating the posts everyday. The posts can have some keywords for your website. This will be a long term job

    2. add my website to as many social book mark and free directories as possible

    3. Post good articles on some hot forum and leave the link there.

    4. Exchange link with some good site

It takes time to get a good result and we need to be patient and keep work on it day by day.

Might consider bookmarking and tagging them too ... if the page or your page on these sites your creating like profiles - if they have an rss feed off them - might want to submit that rss feed URL to feedage or other rss aggregation sites too.
