      Pigeon is for local results only...

      Although I think it helped Yelp out rank in organic SEO. I sure see them a lot more up top these days.

    Actually Google is trying to promote local businesses in specific areas. For example: in google.co.uk they are trying to focus on the quality of SERPS, They results appearing should be of UK businesses, Google is trying to promote businesses.. Therefore, Local business directories are getting a good sight by Google. You are talking about YELP, its just like yellow pages and businesses are listed over YELP. It is well accredited and weighted according to Google point of view. So i Would recommend to do business listing, instead of directories.

    This is what a pigeon Update is..That i have explained Above...Google will look in to the deeper focus on spellings, Grammar, Knowledge Graph, Synonyms and much more... Mostly it will take effect on US English Queries. Google has not yet announced the percentage of queries get affected due to this algorithmic change.. Yet deeper details are not discoverable, that in which countries, it will be rolled out.
