I think I've decided to start doing local SEO and a more general SEO for larger keyword targets (as a service).

Does anyone have any pointers on satisfying customers report wise? What would you want to see?

I'm thinking weekly reports unless ordered (and paid) to do more - Of course a three month minimum contract, maybe 6....any recommendations?

  • I don't do any reports whatsoever. I give my clients a ring every week and let them know what's changed, what is looking optimistic. After each monthly payment, I'll give them a ring or e-mail to let them know what keywords are going to be focused on this month.

I also don't do any minimum contracts. One of my clients has been with me for 3-years. I turned his income from £24,000/yr to £50,000/yr (self-employed, not a "growth" business). He pays me every month because he's earning 100% more - and that's what you need to go after.

I hate automated ranking reports. Perhaps if you're dealing with a SEO savvy customer, then yes. But for the typical brick&mortar business, or eCommerce directors, they don't know what SEO is, nor do they want to dedicate their time to reading a report of jargon. Pick up the phone or e-mail them, it does wonders.

    • ok, that's a good insight - thanks
  • If any reports, ranking reports.

When I do contracts, it is only to lock in the price, never to lock the customer into the service.

  • I've gone the odd root of providing free reporting for the initial 3 months and then offering reporting upgrade for subsequent months as an addition to the normal monthly spend.

    • sounds like a new yorker scheme.
  • charts are more visual, and more likely someone will actually read it instead of a written report

    • Yeah, stats and charts is where I think I'll be going with reporting...and reporting is probably going to be a formality if anything...but whatever. Gotta be pro to show I'm a big dog.

  • Agree with previous posts. Most customers wouldn't know what they are looking at. A simple rankings report and an email of phone call should do the trick. You can use a rank tracker like serpbook or serpfox for ranking reports, more than adequate.
  • It is good thing to keep the clients updated by sending reports, as there trust increase, your report should include the main things you have done in a well presented way.

    • Yeah, professionalism and trust are big in my book. thanks for the input ^^
  • I use AuthorityLabs API to track specific lists of keywords and WebSEOAnalytics for basic reports. Usually however, most clients will be results oriented, you are either delivering an increase in business or you aren't... So a straight-forward approach "cutting the crap" and getting right down to the bread and butter is what's going to get you the highest customer retention. Good luck!

  • aye my answer is don't do SEO at all

just have a great blog, tell folks about you and your life

and Google might love you too

    regards
