Help With Getting #1 Spot On Google

Hello everyone I have a question that hopefully someone will be able to answer. I have several websites that are all keyword targeted. Several of them are on the first page; for instance one of my sites is on page one of google out of 47 million sites. However it is #8 on the first page.

What is the best way of pushing it up to grab that #1 spot? I have another site that was #5 on another keyword and wanted to push it up to the #1 spot so I added some links to it. Unfortunately that pushed it down to #8.

I am a little confused with this; I thought adding links to a site would help it out? Why did my site go down to #8 and should I do this with my other sites that are on the first page and second page or will adding links hurt the site?

I don't mind doing the work that I have to do; however I am still a little confused of what it actually takes to grab that number one spot!!!

If someone could please tell me whether adding links to a site is good and if it is normal for a site to bounce around and then come back stronger after a while. The closest that I have gotten to that #1 spot is #3 and then the site falls.

One more question is how old should a site be before you can add links to it without hurting the site?

Thanks everyone for your support; I am still in the process of learning all this. I can easily build a site and learning how to target the right keywords. Now if I could just learn how to grab that top spot in Google. Sorry post is so long; but hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on this confusion for me.

    Hi Susan,

It sounds like you're just experiencing the infamous "Google dance". Whenever your site acquires new backlinks, or if your site is new and Google is still trying to determine where to rank it, then you'll notice your rankings making quite drastic, unexpected shifts.

You'll be pleased to know however that this is entirely normal, and it doesn't mean you've done anything wrong. Give it time and the rankings will become more stable. The best thing you can do is to continue to build more links. The more relevant, high authority links you have, the merrier.

Oh, and don't worry about too much link building harming you, as this isn't really possible. The most that will happen if Google deems a backlink to be spammy is they will filter it. They won't penalize you in any way. The reason for this is because if off-page optimization could harm your site, then you could just send a whole heap of spammy links to your competition and get them in trouble, which thankfully isn't possible =)

Thanks I was worried that maybe I should stop adding links to my sites; but since you say that adding more will help and make it stronger I will keep adding links gradually.

How many is too many to add in one day? How old does a site have to be before you begin adding links without hurting it?

I appreciate your response that really helped me stop worrying about whether I was doing something wrong.

      Thank You

      Susan

Not a problem Susan, glad to be of help.

There's no limit to how many links you should add each day, my only advice is to be consistent. For example, if you acquire 1000 links one week, then don't suddenly have 0 links for the next 2 weeks, try and make the number of links look as natural as possible. This number can be anything, from 50, to 5000, anything you like - but once again, consistency is key.

There is software for comparative analysis with top 10 web sites for certain keyword, called "IBP" on ibusinesspromoter.com, but this can be risky. Changing some parameters on your site can cause your site going down in Google SERP.

Adding links can be also cause for your site going down. It is also one of the main parameters that Google takes into account in determining position of sites in SERP.
