Am I the only one Not using this ??? I keep seeing it over and over again and I can see the benefit of having several categories with your keywords and sub categories with similar key words, but is it really a must use thing these days??? I have one more question.. .... I always thought when your looking at your site through majestic or site explorer it was a good thing to have a lot of referring domains if you have a lot of links... I'm seeing a few sites beating me out on the serps for a few keywords and when I looked at all their anchors and backlinks it looked like this

DOMAIN AUTHORITY PAGE AUTHORITY 33 /100
PAGE AUTHORITY 43 /100

48 Root Domains

6,776 Total Links

Am I wrong to say "Why are there so few referring domains for that amount of links." I always thought it was better to have 1 link per site rather than 3 links per every site. (Meaning it carries more link juice to have a link from multiple sites, opposed to multiple links from a single domain. And whats really shocking to me is that most of his links are internal links... I know its nice to have your pages linked together on occasion when its relevant, BUT DAMN... 3000 of his links are from "within his site" and the this guy isn't the only one I'm seeing ... Is this the NEW WAY TO BUILD LINKS???? I was under the impression to get links from relevant sites in your niche. Am I missing something? Or is he doing some really good technique that I'm not?

THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT

Silos have been around for years (Google: Bruce Clay).

Even before BC/Silos & long before any modern CMS, HTML site structure was based on a structured treeview with folders/directories.

It's a classic structure that doesn't depend on any SERP algo., it even goes back as far as Windows Desktop, look at any Win7/XP Win. Explorer treeview structure. It's the same concept. Organizing data just works.

    Ignore things like PA/DA.

Silos are great, easy to make too when you are first building a site
    EX (not a real site)
    bestpets.com
    bestpets.com/dogs
    bestpets.com/dogs/dobermans
    bestpets.com/cats
    bestpets.com/cats/siamese

OK, just messing around, but you get the idea, Siamese is a child of Cats, which is the parent. Categories are important.

I understand the benefits of the structure, and how it could be beneficial to google to index those pages and make a possible assumption that your an authority on ex: widgets but is it really necessary to have 1000's of internal links?? Everything I read say yes you are suppose to internally link pages when its relevant but isn't it more important to write great content and build external or incomming links with high PR to an internal page ex www.abc.com/widgets and find other high quality sites in the widget niche and point them to that page with a mixture of anchor text?

Would you want a car with a fast engine & no tires?

Silo structure isn't a compromise, it's both user friendly site nav. for traffic & structured for SEO.

Obviously you need strong external links to get the ball rolling, but those strong external links can be optimized even further with good site structure passing that same authority off to multiple relevant internal pages.

Content quality is up to the webmaster, what purpose does ranking a page have If that same page is crappy content? This isn't some latest fad, it's long term site structure.

SILOing really works. Have you read a Bruce Clay`s blog ?

    It really works (:
You will spend a lot less on backlinks in comparison to conventional structure of site.
