Relavancy is the new PageRank

So there's some talk going on that relevancy is the new PageRank. Of course everyone knows that relevant links are getting more and more important to Google.

But do you think that the complete domain should be relevant or just the article in which your link sits? Would it make a big difference?

  • Well...

Let's be fair first. This isn't recent. In fact that direct sentence about relevancy being the new PR is a line of thought lifted from an interview in 2012.

But it had been discussed long before that. My point I suppose is that this is not new or fresh but rather a tired debate that never ends with a clear answer.

    • Well it's not new, I understand that. But it seems that lately it shows more in the rankings then it did before, at least that's my experience.

Pagerank & relevancy are two completely different things.

Relevant links have been useful for years, the reason I know this is because that's the main thing I've used to get double/triple SERPs per keyword from both the same domain/s (internal links) & multiple same niche domains (external links).

It's not that relevancy is new, it just wasn't used by the masses until recently (the last year or two).
  • Both should be relevant for better results, as SEO works in chain and any link broken could lead to damage of the whole process.
  • Google gives importance to relevancy only if your backlink is of high quality. Low quality relevant backlink has least importance. For instance, there are many low quality directories which can give you a relevant link but such links are considered to be a big SPAM.

Relevance is like the first and most basic requirement for any off-page optimization.. otherwise what is the point?

  • Ofcourse it is better if the link are from a completely relevant website.
  • I don't think that there is ANY common thing without Relevancy and PR... A relevant link is RECOMMENDED when you do Link Building... PR... No idea what do you mean.........
  • So, I like where this is going because Majestic launched their new "Topical Trust Flow" metric which is really cool when checking out profiles.

To me relevancy is 100% becoming more and more of a ranking factor. However, what we often forget is that Page Rank is a GOOGLE metric by Google for Google.

So if I had to choose between a REAL PR8 link from a not so relevant source or a HIGHLY relevant PR3-4 link I'm going to choose the REAL PR8 everytime.

    • besides a very few sites you will never have that choice as PR8 means nothing after a year of no updates.

  • Relevancy has always been and will always be important when it comes to rankings and the impact of a backlink upon it's target (just go research some of the Google patents on the subject).

Has this been dialled up by Google recently? I'm not so sure. Does the subject crop up on a seemingly cyclical basis? Yes.
