Back linking question

I think I know the answer to this, but wanted to get some expert opinions. I am having someone do some Link removal for me. I had gotten together a while back with some colleagues in the same niche as mine and we exchanged links.

So I guess this is not good correct? We had made a page of reputable companies in different areas and listed each others links and we would link back to each other. This was suppose to help us in rankings and have relevant links.

My link removal service suggestion I get them removed. (Although I do not link out to them now) a lot of them still link to me.

So is this considered link farming? or some other bad practice? We are sending emails to get them removed.

Is this hurting me? or helping me.

Best to get them removed?

Link farming is when many (thousands of) links have been placed on a single page/ website. Furthermore , no (quality content) can be found on that page/ website.

Link exchange is when I place a link on my own website (frontpage usually) that points toward your website and you place one that points toward my website, on your website.

Either way, search engines can easily track them. Now, if what you've done it's not too spammy, I don't think that would matter,...but, just to be safe, you would better remove them.
