Anybody paying attention to the Google Adwords settlement?

I got a notice in the mail just the other day about a legal settlement reached in a class action lawsuit against Google. There's no verdict in the case, but there was a settlement reached, and is funded with $20 million by Google.

The case relates to Google consistently overshooting your daily adwords budget by 20%, even if your campaign was paused.

I'm still having that problem. Plus lately, they are billing me for twice as many clicks as I have total visitors.

In the infamous words of the Apollo 13 crew..."Houston, we have a problem."

I've never noticed this happening in my AdWords account, but I only run a couple of ads that don't get heavy clickthrus. Maybe I should go check all my stats, including my web stats. Thanks for the heads up.

I haven't thoroughly read through it yet, but my impression is that we don't need to do anything, unless we want to opt out of the settlement and pursue our own additional action against google.

My immediate concern that I've been discussing with Google during the past two weeks, is that they have been overcharging my adwords account very badly. I just launched a brand new website and a promotional campaign with several traffic sources. Problem is, Google is billing me for clicks equal to 130% of my TOTAL daily unique visitors - from ALL sources.

It's amusing and sad that Google's "motto" is "do no evil". In some ways they have become more evil than Microsoft. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

  • Sometimes I wonder if Google is just robbing people blind. AdSense publishers can see far more clicks (hasn't Google ever heard of a heat map?) than Google pays them for, and AdWords advertisers always seem to get over-charged. Don't they know that they're killing the golden goose if they are, indeed, doing this?
