With Penguin it is a risk to be featured on niche sites?

Let's say you are in a niche selling speed boats - now with Penguin if we get featured on a website (let's see it cost a little money to get top placement) then Google could penalize us for it?

From their stand point how could you even get a solid link with out working on getting it?

Even if you make great content it doesn't seem like you would just randomly get solid backlinks for it?

What does everyone think?

Cheers

How is that related to Penguin?

Penguin has nothing to do with a paid link placement.

If the site has a directory on it to feature companies in the niche.

There's a niche site I found that looks like a big site in the industry but it looks like sites that get featured are put onto a directory that naturally has a link to your site. The people at Google forums make it sound like any link a company pays for is bad but in some cases a link could be from relevant directories in the industry.

Here's what matters the most to the big G's penguin... some things to consider:

    1) Don't use spammy anchor links.. Use a healthy balance.. 25% exact match, 25% long tail (exact match with some added words for a longer phrase), 25% random/untargeted and 25% URL anchor...

    2) Try to score links on extremely relative websites and directories only, keeping in mind Quality Vs. Quantity above all else.

    3) Make sure the sites you are getting links on are not part of networks that are being used for many clients. Sites with hundreds or thousands of outbound do-follow links has far less benefit (and possibly a negative impact) on your SERP. Again, Quality Vs. Quantity.

    4) Don't use all do-follow links, mix it up... 1 no-follow for every 3-5 do-follows is a good practice.

    5) Your ON PAGE situation is far more important these days... Don't stuff your keywords throughout the page content or alt tags, don't use a meta keywords tag at all, use well formatted header tags, etc...

What it really boils down to these days is quality... Guest blogging and carefully selecting the sites you place your links on will help... The more domain authority (DA) and page rank (PR) a site has and the less outbound links it has is the more link juice that will flow to your money site!

    Hope this helps, good luck!

Thanks! I'm mostly trying to get over a Penguin penalty! I think are on site should be smooth now, hope to see results from all our work once they refresh the algorithm which people are speculating could happen sooner than later.

How do you know it is a "penguin" penalty...

What was your drop? Usually with penguin you're dealing with a -99/-100 drop.
Manual Penalty's STILL RANK, but have -50 penalties attached to them.
Panda either sandboxes your site or -299
Pure Spam you're going to see -100 to -299 depending on your rank trackers...

If you have any "proof" drop it here and I'll let you know what you're dealing with.

It's highly likely Penguin - even a Penguin penalty checking website showed our drop at a Penguin release date. From page 1 to page 10 now around 5 or 6.

Are site content is up to par and it isn't filled with duplicate content. There is no manual penalty on our site at all.

Sounds like you are dealing with a penguin. Send me a PM with site URL and I may be able to point you in the right direction for recovery.

Thanks. For privacy reasons I'm not really comfortable sending anyone a link to my site on here but I have taken the options available and worked with an organic seo company for a few months to add content and clean up the site. Deleted whatever we could and disavowed rest of the links pretty much. Penguin refresh may show the results of our work and what to do next.

Some highly relevant links with PR will nearly make you fail-proof. Just remember relevancy, diversification and randomization = key.

You obviously need to research how to brand a site/product.

If I was selling boats I would be sponsoring boat races, fishing tournaments, etc... which would be a lot of backlinks being built by every same niche online magazine site, niche forums, blogs, etc...

Research a backlink profile for chriscraft.com (boats). I haven't looked but I'll bet you see thousands of legit links. That's what branding will get you (legit links).

how about just a lovely blog site

no Google tricks or backlinks, just telling folks about you

my back-links are natural because people love me, well who wouldn't?

Its likely a Penguin issue, before that it was doing fine. Penguin refresh could tell what to do next.
