Should domain names be always niche keyword matching or -- simply branded?

I have been struggle with choosing a keyword rich domain--so in frustration I did some research.

It is interesting that domains like amazon, yahoo, google, facebook, zynga, twitter--mean next to nothing, but they are well known branded names. I appreciate they are not niches, and more like empires.

I know its common sense to have the name as simple and memorable as possible to match a niche.

I saw these articles "among many" on the subject:

    I'm still having insane results with keyword specific domains WHEN AND IF they have been ran thru a domain maturing system. Otherwise just buying them.. no luck at all.. but hope them thru a network and BOOM big results.

    Test things for yourself, I still use EMD's and get results, the internet is a big place I would NOT believe everything you read.

    if you are starting a niche website, I would first go for exact domain match. Branding only comes when we are launching products.

    Having an exact domain match for your niche doesn't guarantee that you will get to page 1 of the SERP, but it does help. You would still need to build contents on your site to establish your authority and let Google know what your website is about.

    If you are launching a product, you would have a name (brand) for your product. In that case, branding makes more sense.

    Keywords domain name are great if they short, nice, to topic, etc. Otherwise brandable domain name would be a better choice.

    Action Man, if you are going to build long term decent online business, go for branded domain instead of nice niche keywords's domain. But, this may take you longer time to build the traffic up compare to niche-keywords domain name which nowaday a lot of people tend to register the similiar niche-keywords domain beside .com (eg: .net / .biz / .org /...etc).

    For "real" businesses, unless it is something really catchy with keywords, I would never take a domain other than the business name.

    www. bestplumbersingettysburg.com is a crappy domain name for Smith Brothers Plumbing, for example.

    I use EMD's for my lease sites because they'll fit any company in that industry, and are easier to rank. If I lose a customer (God Forbid) I can just switch logos, phone# and the about us page when I find a new customer to lease to.

    If I build a custom site for a client? Naturally it will have their branded company in the domain if possible, normally they've already bought it. And with any luck it has a keyword in it already like mableswindowtint.com. If not I will push hard for them to pick a domain with some keywords in it. Google likes relevance.

    EMD gives good results. Branded domains take quite some time in establishment.
