Implement SEO on New Website

I'm just after finishing a website for a family member and I want to get the site ranking for a few keywords.

I have a good understanding of SEO and have implemented...
- Unique content (300-500 word pages)
- Title
- H1 ets headings
- Meta Data

Now I'm ready to start setting up backlinks but want to be careful as I've heard a lot about the famous google slap and don't want to ruin the website. I've been told a few different things to get setup and running with backlinks but is there any guide lines for setting up backlinks?

Should I use articles, press releases, web 2.0 links or what? When should I add authority links to my site?

  • You can use any of back links as long as you are getting the links from good quality websites and not some low quality websites. The websites should also be relevant, do not build back links from websites which are unrelated to your website content. Make sure to build do follow and no follow to have back link diversity, target for more than one keyword and use unique descriptions.

  • Build your backlinks slowly. Don't rush. It needs to grow naturally. Have you tried uploading videos to YouTube with a link back to your site? That way, you can get high authority backlink.

    • A good place to start would be to build up your social media accounts. yes i know they're nofollow and don't contribute to any backlinks or potential rankings.

      however..

If you have good content and all the jazz, someone will eventually link out to you. Depends on how good you are with PR.

    • Thanks I haven't used to yout8ube, does the video I use actually matter or is it just for the link?
  • I would advise to be very careful with your anchor texts. Some links with exact match keywords in your anchor texts are good specially to show up in autocomplete searches. But if you overoptimize those, you risk a Google Penguin penalization. Once you have some of those, it's much better to have backlinks surounded by relevant text related by those keywords. Even if the backlink is nofollow, if it directs some traffic to your site you will have an SEO boost.
  • I don't bother with that anymore. Google isn't going to budge, and they aren't going anywhere, so why fight it?

Set up a robust social media presence, learn how to take full advantage of it, write useful content and then go to town. The links will come.

Edit: To be more specific, I'm talking about content marketing. If you don't have content that people want to share anyway, you're already in trouble. And I don't mean to imply that on-site SEO isn't important. It is. I just don't stress off-site SEO anymore.
  • For new sites, starting on social media is a great idea as it builds brand awareness and generates traffic. SEO is a process and takes time to deliver results. Just try to build quality back links from trusted sites or start building a good PBN in the meantime.
  • Place as the anchor and the anchor without backlinks surrounded thematic text. Number of links should gradually increase without explosions and be with a variety of resources. First you put links to the most visited pages.

  • If you want to build links, then build it with quality site. Quality is important than quantity. If you are starting as a fresh site then do all off page of seo like Bookmarking, directory submission, guest posting, etc
