How should I target keywords with high traffic?

Hi,
I'm building adwords campaigns for software products that I'm promoting, the name of one of these products gets over 300k queries monthly, I'm a little nervous about this because I've had this happen to me where even if I optimize for that keyword/product name I get a bad quality score or ok at best, either way I end up paying a lot more.

So my question is how do you optimize your landing page for a keyword that gets over 300k searches every month? There's obviously a lot of competition for this keyword, so I don't think that putting the keyword in the title tag, meta description, h1 title tags etc makes a big difference for it.

Can someone share how they handle this?

Charlie.

    Hi Charlie,
The ole' bad quality score thingy. My in my opinion I would keep putting the keyword in the title tag, meta description and h1 title tags also scatter related keywords through out your content. Also I am seeing in landing pages more site map links, terms of service links, privacy policies, and even links to related articles. It's more work but you can test this and see if your quality score gets a boost.

    Hey Bob,
Thanks, yeah I actually do have all that stuff as far as the privacy, about and other pages. I have not linked to articles though or other pages outside my site, so only internal linking for this landing page. I figured maybe creating some backlinks by writing articles and posting lenses and hubs might help... and yeah you're right that's a hell of a lot of work.

Register a domain for every keyword and point your ads to each domain.

Are they buying keywords? If you got a lot of traffic then either they are very competitive terms that may cost you a $1000 per day or they are not much worth in terms of commercial value. e.g. Free Wordpress Themes. I am sure you will get lots of traffic but will searchers buy your stuff? Perhaps not... since they are looking for FREE stuffs.

Try to take your site to TOP#3 on google for that keyword query. You will get huge sales and business. To do so, you have to make sure your ONSITE SEO is fine there then you have to start to get more QUALITY backlinks to your site.... That will help you to increase your SERP and take you to TOP#3.

Hey everyone thanks for the great feedback. So what I'm gathering here is that for really competitive keywords I'm probably better off optimizing my landing page for organic search results, correct? I do understand that this is more work and more time to accomplish and that's ok, I just wanted to get some PPC traffic going first to test the landing page.

I do have the keyword in the URL, not in the domain name, I checked my stats again just now and my quality score for this one keyword that I want to use, which is the name of the software product, is 7/10, but the first page bid for it is $2.10 meaning I can't really bid on that. So even though Google finds my landing page to ad and keyword relationship relevant it still puts a high price on the keyword. So I'm going to try getting some organic traffic and building some backlinks to see if that helps at all.

    Thanks again.

For SEO, use hit and trial method. Don't rely on single keyword and try using different keywords for optimization of your website and using in PPC.
