Which is better when it comes to SEO and PageRank linking to homepage or linking to individual pages/posts?

You should have a good mix of both. In an SEO aspect at least. You want to have a natural looking link profile, that was built over time.

PR, authority, etc. flows downhill. You should always link to homepage, and homepage should
link to virtually everything in some way. Only link to individual pages if you have a lot of time
      and places to link to.

Unnatural linking has nothing to do with natural or volume. It has to do with spam.
Stop spamming, and you have nothing to worry about. Keep spamming, slowly,
and you are still spamming no matter how natural you think that looks.

Linking to both homepage and internal is important. Just ensure that the overall link profile looks natural.

And linking only home page is risky, if you penalized, your whole site will be affected.. if you are linking individual pages/posts, penalization will affect those individual pages/posts etc.

When you create backlinks in authority sites for your homepage link, it will help you to get a Good Page Rank as well as Good position in Search Engine Results Page. Although it may takes long time for high competitive keywords but it is better to build an authority sites/blog.
When you create backlink for individual pages/posts, you may get a Good Position in SERPs within a short period of time but It will not stay for a long time.
And the another factor is that, if you create huge backlinks for individual pages/post then home page, it may consider as SPAM that may affect your page rank as well as keywords rank.

I echo the comments by the people above, not one is better than the other, you have to do both, that is ensuring your homepage and internal pages/posts gets links.

That said, if we break it down further, we can look at a few considerations when linking back to our homepage and internal webpages, be it using internal links or external links

There should be a good mix of internal and external links to your homepage and internal webpages because if every link only goes to your homepage and nowhere else, it looks unnatural and can subject you to over-optimization under Google Penguin. I've been looking around for what looks natural and studied sites' external link profiles - it really varies. The homepage usually gets the most links, but there isn't a natural average regarding what percentage of the total links are pointing the homepage. Then, the important or higher tiered webpages usually get quite a number of external links (but lesser than the homepage, although it's possible to have more backlinks than homepage). The number of links dwindle down across other less popular pages until there's no links at all to some webpages.

So....in view of that, IMO, a good way to structure your internal and external links are:

    a) create internal links from your homepage to your top pages that you want people to find from your homepage. This also makes it really easy for Google to follow find your important pages (or pages you want to rank better or get more PR) from the homepage when it crawls your site.

    b) Embark on creating internal links within your webpages. Your internal webpages should be linking to each other so that it makes it easy for Google to find your deep webpages, as well as pass the link juice around your site amongst your internal pages. You can use the cornerstone concept to create this structure. It's relatively easy to implement and Yoast explains it well here:

    https://yoast.com/cornerstone-content-rank/

    c) Get external dofollow links from authority sites to your homepage and internal pages. Make sure your anchor texts from these sites are also natural, with a mix of brand, bare urls, keywords and/or generic phrases.

    d) If you are trying to rank for some of your internal webpages optimized for a certain keyword, you can try this. Create some backlinks from external dofollow authority sites to your important webpages as well as the homepage, using keyword anchor texts. It helps with the rankings. But ONLY do this if you already have a few hundred to thousands of links so that your link profile won't look unnartural after this exercise. This thing really works, but this strategy is NOT for new sites or sites with very few backlinks.

Both! Start with the homepage (but don't over do it) and then start seeing what pages are starting to rank. Once pages start to rank well start sending links to those pages, also focus on sending links to the pages that rank and more importantly are bringing traffic. That way you grow your site properly.

You have to maintain ratio of both home and internal inks.

Suppose you link your home page 10 times then you link your internal pages 5 - 6 times so that your links look natural.
