SEMRush vs. SpyFu for organic keyword list generation?

I was wondering what people's experiences are on using SEMRush vs. SpyFu to generate keyword lists (for organic SEO purposes, not PPC).

Do they get their data from similar places? Is one more recent than the other? Does one generate more in depth lists?

Or any other input you have. Thanks

That data is usually outdated but still useful for ad titles/descriptions, example, I kind of doubt the average webmaster would run the same ad copy for a year unless the CTR was profitable. I'm not talking about HUGE sites like ebay, those guys blast a bunch of junk looking for something to stick, they have millions $$ to play with on PPC. Anyways, the data can be useful as a starting point, test, tweak as needed...

SEM Rush and SpyFu only monitor mid tail/ head terms. They do not monitor long tail traffic.

You can have a site which gets 100k UV a month from organic and SEM Rush notes that it has around 20 keywords ranking.

The best thing about SEM Rush is quick competitive data and scrape lists on keywords on mid-head terms.

It is never going to be an accurate source yet they do ok, as noted above you can also use them for ad copy scrapes.

Thanks a lot for the input guys

Does anyone know if SEMRush/Spyfu simply scrape the Adwords Keyword Planner or do they get their keyword lists from elsewhere?

May I ask whether you prefer one over the other, in terms of SEMRush and Spyfu?

And do their keyword lists differ much from the Adwords Keyword Planner? I know that SEMRush and Spyfu cache so they're a bit out of date, but are the keyword lists similar to the Adwords planner?

Also as I'm interested in generated keyword lists for organic - if one did want long tail results, is there a service you would recommend over these two?

All 3rd party site/software uses the Google Adwords API for their data numbers/keywords. There's no way anyone outside of Google knows millions of traffic data numbers without pulling data from the Adwords API.

The ad titles/descriptions are being scraped from the SERPs, that's how they're getting the date first found, date last found, etc...

      Hey Guys,

      Founder of SpyFu here.

I can confirm you that we get our CPC, Search Volume data, etc directly from Keyword Planner. We pull updated data from Keyword Planner as soon as Google updates it, which is monthly.

      Regarding this:

You can customize SpyFu to *your* exact niche. If there are any keywords that you want us to track that we aren't: branded keywords, super long tail, whatever -- you can add those keywords to SpyFu, and we'll start tracking them
for you -- forever. You can add up to 10k new keywords per month. I don't think anybody else let's you do that.

Here's a screenshot of where you add those keywords:

      Cheers,

Both are great tools but Semrush is better. What I love the most about Semrush is it's ability to track virtually all the keywords your site is ranking for and their current positions. I use that feature to get an idea of how my sites are performing and for competition research.

For keyword research, Semrush is also useful but not that accurate. I suggest you use keyword planner instead if you want to find keywords with it.

The problem with SEMRush is the monthly updates to the database take too long. Today is December 6 and the database has not been updated since Nov 27.
