From my experience, social bookmarking is better for building traffic rather than improving your SE positions. That said, provided the social bookmarking sites don't have a "nofollow" policy, they would count to your SEO effort. I think they work best with certain types of sites, especially blogs.

i think social bookmarking effects lots in search engine especially google. i use that regularly and it helps my blog lots.

keep doing a few each day, bookmark different items, including maybe one article from a different niche here or there so it doesn't look like you're spamming (although I rarely do this myself I've heard it could help fend off big problems later).

I've had the most success with bookmarking my videos in youtube over articles at directories.

Create mutual friendships and once you reached a point, tell them to rate your submission. Then when it gets voted to the popular section, thousands of Bloggers will see that it is popular and blog about it/link to it. That is the effective way to get good backlinks from social bookmarking.

Submit all your posts on top 10 bookmarking sites including digg, reddit, stumble and so on and you will surely notice some great change in your traffic and this will probably give you increase in SERP soon as well.

Bookmarks are similar to the value of forum links, in my opinion. They aren't very relevant, so they are not going to give you a huge boost in the search engines, unless you get a lot of them. You should still get them though because it is better to have them than not have them.

When you're trying to improve your rankings in the search engines, you need to think in terms of weeks and months, not day. Links take time to be crawled and discovered. And search engines improve the rankings of sites gradually, so you have to be patient.

In the mean time, you can comment on blogs, leave signature in forums that link back to your site, and do some article, and your rankings are guaranteed to improve - over time. Best of luck.
