dash or no dash

Was reading something yesterday where some guy who says he makes lots of money on line was talking seo for his websites and all the examples he was giving his web sites had a - dash in between the words of his url, dog-training-online-for-pugs. this isn't his site but he was using the dash i between each word, when I started doing the internet thing everyone said not to use the dash, has things changed is a dash better now does it make google look at my url more closely for its description of what the for what the site is about.

  • I've heard NOT to use dashes because it can send a 'potential scammy site' signal to google. I'd avoid it for sure.

      Having hyphens in a URL is common URL structure, it's been that way for years.

      If you mean an EMD with hyphens, still no big deal for SEO but repeat traffic will never happen because traffic isn't going to remember hyphens in a domain name.

      If you mean hyphens in a domain name, yea, that's kinda spammy looking but hyphens on internal page URLs is common practice.

  • I've never heard of a dashes having a positive effect, and I can't think of any reason they would. It helps with user readability, I suppose, but that's not a big deal. I've read that Google considers it a negative attribute.

  • Its just to make the URL worth readable. People also call it SEO friendly URL's. Its also somewhat difficult to read dynamic URLs which are generated automatically.

    Also as said before, who's going to remember 'dashes' in a domain name? However, dashes in a domain name still work if the person bothers to bookmark your page, where the link clicked on won't rely on memory but selecting a link from a list on one's browser bar.

  • Using dashes for internal pages URL's is recommended if the page URL has more than one keyword. As for domain names, it is not recommended.
