Maybe try to highlight the author's names, so when someone searches the web for an author be sent to your site, or for poem titles, not for certain words, because as you said, those words can be found somewhere else, too.

Depends where the poems are from.

If you are taking copyright material and using it as your own, possible to be penalized.

Public domain content on the otherhand (loads of poems out of the copyright period) and you will compete on equal footing with anyone else using the content. No one owns the content, therefore every webpage that uses them can theoretically rank page 1 in Google and Google won't penalize for having the same basic content as everyone else.

I've made a LOT of money from public domain content. My first public domain content site Free Public Domain Books from the Classic Literature Library haven't updated in over 5 years, needs a serious makeover. Some years that domain has made tens of thousands of dollars.
