The connection issue is most likely caused by incorrect database config values. Mgreener is also quite right some hosts use different hostname instead of the default localhost; Godaddy is a good...

Looks like the countdown is in the secondary widget and the other stuff is in your primary widget area.

Just go to your widgets options and add a blank text box or a widget you actually want to...

You can use custom templates if you want!. This allows you to add pages through wordpress and use a template in your themes directory.

Just take a php file like your themes page.php file, save it...
