Ok, here is a data-driven answer.

One of my posts was linked from wikihow, a month ago. Until then, it was not ranking very well, and its organic traffic was poor.

I didn't notice the link...

The keyword is not a low competition keyword. The post suddenly ranked better than "prevention" and "livestrong" for the same keyword.
