Many Mass Mailing services are now tagged as spammers and the Emails are sent to Junk boxes and not viewed. Generally speaking it is not a bad Idea but depends on the contractor.

You do not have to worry about low quality or irrelevant backlinks much, but the ones coming from spamming websites will hurt you.
