by building a few backlinks everyday by yourself you can build page reputation for free :) also doing it yourself means the job will be quality work rather than trusting some charlatan haha

I disagree - it's very easy to incorporate a long tail keyword in anchor text say, from an article you've written yourself and then distributed to a few key sharing sites! Then doing the same...

Backlinks definitely - but if it's extremely competitive then you can't afford to slip up. build consistent backlinks - heaps everyday. if you stop then you will risk slipping back down!
