A lot of things come into factor. How competitive the keyword you are trying to rank for is. How well your competitors do SEO for the keyword... etc. I've seen it done. But not often and the keyword...

From a Social Media standpoint. Be yourself. The company I work for posts numerous funny links along with sales pitches. Just don't do 100% sales pitches.
