How to check backlinks?

We have been using yahoo site explorer as our site has over 5000 links, but yahoo was excellent in showing the top 1000, what else (free) can be used to check backlinks?

NOT Google webmaster...

Article submissions, blog comments, press releases, directory submissions, PAD file submissions, forum links, profile links.

But we have found that you need relevant links to your site to benefit.

Well you can always right click and select "view source", then you can see what keywords they have optimised for, so you can make you mind up from there.
