Update your server and other apps. Patch it whenever new updates are released. Make sure that your scripts and database are hardened. No flaws on the scripts or else you'll get hit with XSS or SQL...

I have a different approach. 10-15 article submission a week. 5-10 daily blog commenting and forum posting, then 30-40 profile backlinking. But not all links are pointing to the main website :)
