i believe that google does not distinguish between non-www and www backlinks
and since it has a 301 redirect, all backlinks will be considered to be for the new domain, and all PR will eventually be...

for what you are doing, its worth it to buy a previous domain with PR, go to the godaddy domain aftermarket, and i once found a PR4 site for $5 on it!
