I've made my first dollars with free sites, squidoo and blogger plus articles. I used the money to buy domains and hosting. However, if you start directly with your sites you build them faster....

Hubpages is a pain, they suddenly flaged my hubs even if some were on their site for months. I do suspect that your competitors may flag your hubs.
