I guarantee you 100% I could do this with PHP alone. No Javascript needed. If you need exact steps let me know. But to answer your question, yes this could be done with PHP and only PHP.

Umm... yeah it's possible but PHP doesn't render the display or visual layer. It would be used to store the data in the background. So you'd be doing the visual layer of this with javascript, jquery...

Sprites are the best. My website used to take ages to load when I used different links for different images. That solved my problem and improved the loading time dramatically.

Another shout for W3 Total Cache.

It is a bit fiddly to set up but you should ask your hosting provider to recommend the settings to use because they can be affected by the many different server...

Yeah try WP Super Cache and just tick the check boxes that says recommended on the description. The gzip compression is not checked by default but you may want to try it if your web host supports it...

super cache or W3 total cache ... but be careful with either of them. If your site is plug-in heavy they can cause ut oh's! ... the bad kind. My advice is to install it and leave the default settings...
