It really depends.
If you want to analyze your own website you can use Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools.
If you want to analyze your competition it`s a bit tricky because you can`t use...

I don't think the concern is whether is labeled 'black hat', 'grey hat', or whatever. Of course Google doesn't like it. It's unnatural. But is it safe? For sure, there's easy ways to hide this...
